Native American, North America, Archaic to Woodland period, ca. 3000 BCE to 1000 CE. A tactile record of daily life, this stone grinding set - composed of a metate and accompanying mano - speaks to the essential rhythms of sustenance and survival in prehistoric North America. The larger stone, worn into a shallow concavity through repeated use, served as the metate, while the rounded handstone was grasped and moved in steady, practiced motions to crush and grind plant materials. The surfaces bear the quiet testimony of long use. The metate's basin, softly hollowed and smoothed, reflects the cumulative action of countless grinding cycles, while the mano shows a rounded, ergonomic form shaped as much by human hands as by intentional selection. Together, they formed a fundamental toolset used for processing maize, seeds, nuts, and other vegetal foods, transforming raw resources into usable sustenance.
