Description:

Ancient Seas, Late Jurassic to Cretaceous period, ca. 155 to 66 million years ago. A beautiful nautilus and ammonite association that fossilized together, the ammonite resting slightly within the chamber opening of the nautiloid shell. While similar in appearance and both belonging to classes of cephalopods, ammonites and nautiluses belong to different subclasses and have distinct evolutionary paths. Members of the nautilus family survived the catastrophic mass extinction of the Cretaceous era, and ammonites did not - so these fossilized remains date no later than the Cretaceous period. The shells have been polished, ad have some small areas of fiery iridescence. Size: 7" Diameter x 4" W (17.8 cm x 10.2 cm); 9.75" H (24.8 cm) on included custom stand.
