Description:

Egypt, Ptolemaic Period, ca. 332–30 BCE. A beautifully carved figure of a sacred bull, sculpted from a lustrous mottled hardstone—likely orbicular jasper—with swirling inclusions in hues of crimson, cream, black, and rose. The bull stands on an integral base with squared legs, stylized musculature, and a serene, forward-facing expression. The fine polish and precision of the carving reveal the technical mastery of Egyptian lapidary artisans during the late dynastic period. Size: 3.25" L x 3" H (8.3 cm x 7.6 cm)

In Ptolemaic Egypt, the bull—particularly the Apis bull—held immense religious significance as a living manifestation of the god Ptah, later associated with Osiris. This figure may have served as a votive offering, household devotional object, or temple dedication, especially in connection with the Serapeum at Saqqara, where sacred bulls were buried and venerated.
