Description:

Ancient Egypt, Late Period, ca. 664 to 332 BCE. A rare green glazed faience menat amulet, symbol of powerful women. It is lioness headed as it depicts the goddess Sekhmet wearing a sun disc crown above a panel ending in a circle. A small loop on the back is for suspension. The surface of the panel and disc are incised, meant to replicate the necklace upon which the menat amulet is based. The menat was a ceremonial item associated with the goddess Hathor, and her priestesses are commonly shown holding the emblem. Queens and ladies-in-waiting could also wear and / or carry the symbol. Size: 1.25" H (3.2 cm); 1.8" H (4.6 cm) on included custom stand.
