Ancient Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, 26th to 31st Dynasty, ca. 664 to 332 BCE. A fantastic wadjet (also wedjat, udjat, or Eye of Horus) scaraboid / oval shaped amulet for protection made from glazed faience; the obverse face divided into sections of small wadjet eyes in rows; eighteen eyes in total with black pigment highlighting the pupils. The multiple eyes of Horus greatly increased the amulet's power- and more than one or many pairs of eyes were used during the Late Period. The flattened underside depicts an incised goddess or woman in the birthing position, squatting with legs spread. Birth was dangerous for mother and child, requiring a potent amulet such as this. Pierced for suspension and displayed on a custom swivel mount. Size: 1.8" L x 1.6" W (4.6 cm x 4.1 cm)
