Description:

Maya regions, ca. 500 - 800 CE. Fine, polychrome decorated pottery cylinder vase, with an audience scene of a young lord seated on a jaguar skin covered pillow with three attendants around him. Before him is a kneeling figure with arms folded in reverence. Beside him is a large bundled vase marked with glyphs, behind him a mirror propped within a wooden frame, with two kneeling attendants each in elaborate decorated loincloths and turbans with long plumage. One with a hummingbird nibbling the projecting flower, another bundled jar between them with bone blood letting implements on top, a dish with offerings on the ground and a column of three secondary glyphs in the field. A very nice example. Size: 6.125”H x 5.375”W (15.6 x 13.7cm).

Provenance: Collection of Chris J. Daras, NJ. Active 1980’s - 2000’s. To family by descent. Ex. Arte Primitivo, auction 26, lot 104, 7/2003. Ex. John-Platt/Daniel M. Friedenberg collection, acquired from Sotheby’s, NYC., sale of May 15, 2003, lot 293. Red painted on base: “1982.71.110”.
