Description:

Ancient Egypt, Third Intermediate to Late Dynastic period, 21st to 31st Dynasty, ca. 1069 to 332 BCE. A faience charm in the form of a pilgrim vessel with twin curved handles flanking the neck and a bright turquoise faience glaze. In life, vessels were used to carry home holy water or oil from the lamps in the sacred sanctuaries that pilgrims had visited on their travels. In Egypt this type of flasks was offered as a gift around July 19th, when the Egyptian New Year's festival took place. It is not currently known what contents they were made to hold - some have suggested cosmetics, but others believe they may also have been made to hold the waters of the flooded Nile. This miniature charm with a turquoise glaze symbolized both the Nile's water and the sacred vessel. Size: 0.88" L x 0.5" W (2.2 cm x 1.3 cm)
