Description:

East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th century CE. A finely carved Chinese Qing Dynasty nephrite jade figure depicting a rider astride a fantastical beast, rendered in pale celadon stone with traces of calcification and surface wear from age. The figure, with stylized facial features and tied hair, sits upright upon a griffin-like creature, its form blending avian and leonine traits, perhaps intended to represent a dragon or the auspicious pixiu. Incised scrollwork embellishes both rider and mount, lending texture and visual rhythm to the otherwise smooth surface. The openwork carving beneath the legs and tail demonstrates technical refinement, while the creature’s curling beak, flowing mane, and pronounced chest emphasize its mythological power. Size: 1.8" L x 0.6" W x 2.1" H (4.6 cm x 1.5 cm x 5.3 cm)

Objects of this type reflected both protective and symbolic associations in the Qing era, with jade itself esteemed as a stone of virtue, endurance, and authority. Mythical animals such as dragons and pixiu were believed to ward off evil and attract prosperity, while equestrian themes underscored strength and noble bearing. This piece, compact yet intricately worked, embodies the Qing dynasty’s appreciation for jade miniatures as both amulets and artistic treasures.
