Description:

East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, Qianlong period, ca. 1711 to 1799 CE. A finely painted Qing dynasty porcelain blue on white moonflask, the domed sides each centered by a raised boss with ruyi motifs within line and key-fret borders. Encircling the boss are eight petal-shaped panels enclosing the ba jixiang (Eight Buddhist Emblems), each framed within geometric reserves. A wide band of lotus scrolls flows elegantly around the edges of the vessel, while the cylindrical neck and splayed foot are encircled by bands of stylized lingzhi. At the shoulders, a pair of double dragon-scroll handles rises and curves upward, joining the neck with a powerful sculptural presence. The form of this moonflask recalls early Ming prototypes of the Yongle period (1403-1425), which themselves were influenced by Middle Eastern metalwork imported into China through the flourishing maritime and overland trade routes. Size: 5.1" L x 9.6" W x 13.7" H (13 cm x 24.4 cm x 34.8 cm)

This Qianlong-era interpretation represents the imperial taste for archaism, where earlier forms were revived and perfected in porcelain at Jingdezhen. The crisp cobalt painting emphasizes boldness over subtle shading, a stylistic choice that suggests a nineteenth century production despite the six-character Qianlong reign mark inscribed to the underside. Such marks continued to be used well beyond the emperor's reign, reflecting the enduring prestige of Qianlong imperial wares and the potters' desire to associate later works with this celebrated era of porcelain craftsmanship.
