Description:

South America, Peru / Bolivia, Quechua or Aymara culture, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A pair of beautiful handwoven textiles from the Andean region of Peru and Bolivia - a bag known as chuspas for carrying coca leaves or other possessions and a partial strap from a belt or sash. The chuspa is likely made from camelid (alpaca) fibers, with fringe tassels along the bottom and lower side edges, and mounted in a frame and ready to display. The sash is also made from either camelid fibers or perhaps a sheep wool blend and uses the double weave technique - the reverse face coloration is opposite from the obverse! Size of bag textile: 8" L x 10" W (20.3 cm x 25.4 cm); frame: 13.25" L x 11.5" W (33.7 cm x 29.2 cm)

  • Condition: The bag is mounted on a canvas backing in a modern frame (no glass). Sash is not framed. The sash has fraying and tears along the length and fringe. The sash is only half or partial piece and not full length. Tearing and fraying to the bag, but overall good condition considering the age and use.
