Description:

Pre-Columbian, Quimbaya culture, Colombia, ca. 4th to 7th century CE. This is a delightful flat pottery figure with tubular arms and legs. He is seated with his arms raised to his sides and finely rendered feet and toes. The face has long lines for eyes and mouth, and a long, narrow, hooked nose; given the Quimbaya penchant for large gold ornaments, at one time this piece may have had gold through his nose and his pierced ears. Holes in the top of his head might also have been decorated, perhaps with gold, feathers, or fabric. The holes in his chest are probably to prevent cracking during the kilning process. He has some geometric patterns painted on his face that may represent tattooing. He and figures like him are known as slab figures, and they were placed with burials in shaft and chamber tombs, perhaps as guardians or companions for the deceased. Compare this figure to the one held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Size: 9" W x 11.7" H (22.9 cm x 29.7 cm) Size: 8.75" W x 12.95" H (22.2 cm x 32.9 cm)
