Lot 125
Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Quimbaya culture, ca. 9th to 14th century CE. A finely modeled Quimbaya pottery figure that merges human representation with utilitarian function, this seated effigy features a circular opening at the top of the head, indicating it likely also served as a vessel. The body is compact and columnar, with the legs bent forward in a stable seated posture. Only the right hand is preserved and visible, resting firmly atop the corresponding leg, while the opposite hand is now missing. The face is defined by narrow horizontal slit eyes, a small closed mouth, and a prominent, vertically ridged nose that projects strongly from the plane of the face. A band of red pigment encircles the eyes and extends across the upper face, with additional red slip visible on the chest and shoulders. Areas of lighter cream slip remain on the lower body, creating a two-tone surface characteristic of Quimbaya ceramic decoration. Size: 5.1" W x 8.3" H (13 cm x 21.1 cm)
The ears are simply modeled and project slightly from the sides of the head. The overall form is smooth and rounded, with minimal incision and emphasis placed on facial structure and painted surface. The opening at the crown reinforces the vessel function, suggesting use for liquids or ritual substances and reflecting the integration of sculptural and practical roles in Quimbaya ceramics. A well-preserved and expressive example of Quimbaya figural pottery, the piece demonstrates the culture's preference for compact forms, bold facial features, and the combination of effigy and container in a single object.
