Description:

Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Middle Cauca, Quimbaya, ca, 1200 to 1400 CE. A hand-built "solid pan pottery" figure from the Middle Cauca region, the head and body comprised of finely worked square and rectangular slabs of clay with thick coils attached for arms and legs. Boasting an expressive pose, he sits with both hands resting upon upraised knees. His legs are bent and separated revealing a small phallus, and both feet are firmly planted on the ground. The neck is indicated via a deep groove as is customary of such Quimbaya figures. Grooves around the knees and upper arms indicate that ornamental bands were once present. There is some indication of incised marks for the eyes and mouth; however the large nose is naturalistically modeled with a pierced septum presumably for a gold nose ring. Other piercings on forehead, top of head, and chest most likely for additional ornamentation. Custom stand. A superb example. Size: 6.625" W x 6.875" H (16.8 cm x 17.5 cm); 7" H (17.8 cm) on included custom stand.
