Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Middle Cauca region, Quimbaya, ca. 1200 to 1400 CE. A hand-built "solid slab" terracotta figure from the Middle Cauca region, the head and body comprised of finely-worked square and rectangular slabs of clay with thick coils attached for arms and legs. Boasting an expressive pose, he is seated with one hand resting on his knee and the other reaching forward in an almost demanding gesture. His legs are bent and separated, revealing a small phallus, and both feet are firmly planted on the ground. The neck is indicated via a shallow groove, characteristic of this form of Quimbaya figure, and grooves around the knees and arms suggest that ornamental bands, perhaps made of gold based on similar examples, were once present. The eyes and mouth are slit-form in composition, though the nose is large and pierced, probably for an accompanying nose ring. Other piercings on forehead, top of head, and chest were most likely meant for additional ornamentation. Size: 5.75" W x 7.75" H (14.6 cm x 19.7 cm).

- Condition: Repairs to tip of head, one arm, nose, both legs, and part of base, with light adhesive residue and small losses along break lines. Age-commensurate surface wear, small chips and losses to hands, feet, base, and head, and some surface discoloration. Nice craquelure to surface slip material, with light earthen deposits and great mineral deposits overall.
