Description:

Western Europe, Eocene Epoch, ca. 40 million years ago. A large and very rare natural interior casting of a prehistoric sea snail, preserved within its limestone matrix. After this giant gastropod's death, sediment filled the interior of the spiral shell, which later lithified as the outer shell material dissolved away, leaving behind the perfect internal mold of the whorl. The result is a dramatic corkscrew form emerging vertically from the host rock, both specimen and matrix composed of the same stone. The exact findsite is unknown, and while it is uncertain whether this specimen represents a Turritella shell or a Campanile giganteum, it is an impressive fossil casting measuring roughly 12 inches (about 30 cm) in length! With its rich earthen coloration and bold vertical display, this piece highlights the remarkable natural process of fossilization and erosion, transforming a once-living marine shell into a sculptural geological form. Size with matrix: 10" L x 7.5" W x 15" H (25.4 cm x 19 cm x 38.1 cm); shell cast only: 12.5" L x 4" W (31.8 cm x 10.2 cm)
