Description:

Europe, Paris, France, ca. 1563 CE. An original leaf form the Biblia Latina, Testamenti Novi, with an elaborate woodcut engraving depicting the Adoration of the Magi, printed on handmade paper in Paris by Hieronymum de Marnef. The woodcuts of this Bible were executed by the Master Bernard Salamon (1506-1561), the famed Lynonnese mannerist of the Fontainebleau School. (Reference: Darlow and Moule #6144) This leaf also contains text from Matthew 1:16 - 2:7 which generally translates, "And Jacob begot Joseph . . . The angel of the Lord appeared to him in his sleep, saying: Joseph, son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife . . . She shall bring forth a son: and thou shalt call his name Jesus. For he shall save his people from their sins . . . There came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, saying, where is he that is born king of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the east, and are come to adore him . . . " A rare find. Size: 4.5" L x 3" W (11.4 cm x 7.6 cm)
