Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Java, ca. 19th century or earlier CE. A magnificent tombak spear, featuring a long wooden shaft carved with a grooved texture on the butt end and near the neck, perhaps for both grip and decoration. The shaft neck is covered with a 92-94% silver decorative fitting, with classic Javanese silver wirework, scrolling filigree, and rosette shapes, adding an element of luxury. The weapon is fitted with a slender watered steel blade with nickel veining - similar to a kris weapon. Protecting the blade is a carved wooden sheath or guard, with a relief floral motif and a lotus bud finial. The surface is lacquered in a red cinnabar pigment over black. This is a beautiful and imposing piece, perhaps once carried by a royal guard due to its ornate nature, blending ceremonial artistry with functional design. Size: 74.5" L x 2" W (189.2 cm x 5.1 cm); 75" H (190.5 cm) on included custom stand; silver quality: 92% to 94%

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, acquired from 2000 to 2010
