Native American, Northwestern United States, Alaska, Cup'ik / Yup'ik culture, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A superb headdress / forehead mask made from bentwood covered with strips of hide and adorned with a carved wood puffin frontlet with a fish. Feathers and painted whiskers or feather quills are attached to the puffin and headband. This headdress / mask was worn with the puffin protruding from the wearer's brow as ritualistic or dance regalia. Puffins were invaluable birds to Alaskan tribes, providing meat, eggs, and the beaks / feathers were used as adornments; these birds symbolized a natural prowess as fishermen. Size: 13.5" L x 9" Diameter x 7" H (34.3 cm x 22.9 cm x 17.8 cm)
A photograph by Edward S. Curtis (1868-1952) is part of the USA Library of Congress collection, titled "Maskette - Nunivak" published February 28th, 1929, and shows a Nunivak man wearing a headdress consisting of a protruding headband with feathers, and a wooden bird head in front that is very similar to this piece.

- Condition: Patina and dark discoloration to hide headband. Stable pressure fissure on wood puffin head. Some fraying and bending to feathers. Overall great used condition with signs of age and use.
