North America, Native American, Pacific Northwest, Alaska, Inuit Eskimos, ca. 1880 CE. A rare ensemble of ten carved Eskimo tools in a variety of forms from the late 1800s, likely carved from caribou bone or the bones of another native mammal. The tools consist of two bone-handled metal scalpels with one having a beveled edge; four smoothing tools with incised designs and pierced ends; a scraping instrument with a protruding edge; a thin clip with a tapered end design; a two-pronged fork with a carved dark-colored fish-shaped handle; and an intricately-carved open-work butter knife with concentric circle designs and a bobbin-shaped end. Size of largest tool: 0.625" W x 7.375" H (1.6 cm x 18.7 cm).

Provenance: private Chicago, Illinois, USA collection, acquired in the 1980's
