Description:

**Originally Listed At $300**

South Asia, India, ca. 19th century CE (possibly earlier). A carved marble fragment of a head, likely from a statue of a Hindu deity or royal devotee. This piece was previously identified as a representation of Krishna. The serene face is naturalistically rendered with softly modeled features and remains of pigments - red, black, white, and yellow - highlighting the eyes, hair, brows, and lips. A crown adorned with incised rosettes sits atop the head, indicative of divine or noble status. The style and material suggest it may date anywhere from the 17th to 19th century CE (perhaps repainted over the years), a period when marble sculpture flourished in India, particularly under the influence of the Mughal and later regional courts. Size: 3" W x 5" H (7.6 cm x 12.7 cm)
