Description:

Ancient Near East / Western Asia, Anatolia, ca. 1000 BCE. A beautiful cast-copper axe head with an elongated ovoid socket ending in a small knob-shaped butt. The thick shoulder projects perpendicularly from the curved edges of the socketing shaft, narrows, and then widens to a crescent-shaped blade edge with pointed upper and lower corners. Axes like this example were mounted on the ends of slender poles. Thick layers of green, russet, and wheat-hued patina cover the axe head, and sparkling areas of green patina indicate traces of malachite formation. A rare example to find intact! Size: 3.875" W x 6.1" H (9.8 cm x 15.5 cm); 10.4" H (26.4 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Richard Wagner collection, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA, acquired in the 1960s
