Description:

Northwestern Europe, Scandinavia / Northern Germany region, Nordic Bronze Age, ca. 1700 to 500 BCE. A superb bronze short sword formed with a straight, double-edged tapering blade defined by a flat midrib. The separately cast hilt is secured to the blade and features a stylized semi-circular guard, above which rises a grip decorated with incised linear motifs and vertical ribbing. The design continues onto the underside of the rhomboid pommel, which is finished with a raised terminal knob encircled by linked spirals. This well-balanced piece reflects both the functional and ceremonial aspects of Nordic warrior culture during the Bronze Age, when such swords were symbols of status as much as practical weapons. Size: 18.3" L x 2.25" W (46.5 cm x 5.7 cm)

Provenance: ex-Sleiman Aboutaam collection, Switzerland, 1970s-1990s; ex-Kurt Deppert collection, Germany, 1970s
