Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, Southwestern Colombia, Calima, ca. 100 BCE to 400 CE. A rare, hand-built pottery mask depicting a flayed face covered in deep incisions or lacerations indicative of being devoid of skin. The anguish expressive on this face is all too real given the deep cuts along the lips, eyes, and virtually every visible surface thereabouts. An alternative to the primary macabre interpretation is an exceedingly old individual with deep skin wrinkles. Size: 3.125" L x 6.75" W x 6.8" H (7.9 cm x 17.1 cm x 17.3 cm); 8.6" H (21.8 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-Splendors of the World, Hawaii, USA, before 2010
