Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chancay, ca. 1000 to 1470 CE. A whimsical, hand built orangeware vessel in the shape of a fish, with three fins on each side, a dorsal fin on its back, and a lunate tail. Its friendly visage is delineated with bas relief circular eyes, and an incised smile. A large tubular neck rises above, and much of the upper section's surface is marked with black striations created via negative resist. In the Pre-Columbian era, the underworld was envisioned as a vast subterranean sea inhabited by aquatic creatures who together symbolized the regenerative cycle of birth and death. Size: 13.75" L x 6.75" H (34.9 cm x 17.1 cm)
