Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chancay culture, ca. 1000 to 1450 CE. A rare textile effigy in avian form, created by wrapping red camelid wool yarn around a bundle of sticks or grasses to form the body, wings, and legs. Distinctive details include tufts of human hair affixed as a crest and tail, with applied yarn forming circular eyes. Such figures are believed to have been funerary accompaniments, placed in tombs as symbolic offerings or guardians for the deceased. Size: 10" L x 6" W (25.4 cm x 15.2 cm)
