Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chavin, ca. 1200 BCE. A special brownware stirrup vessel, the substantial tubular stirrup presenting termini in the form of crustaceans with claws extending to and delineated upon the upper section of the globular vessel. The body is finely incised with an underworld deity who is the predecessor to Ai Apec, a principal god known for his impressive transformations, here showing fangs, jaguar claws, and a snake tongue. In addition, a playful monkey graces the composition. Size: 7" in diameter x 10" H (17.8 cm x 25.4 cm)

One more intriguing point, the lobsters or crabs featured on the stirrup are also a reference to Ai Apec who oftentimes assumed the form of a sea crustacean.
