Description:

North America, Western United States, Montana, Garfield County, Hell Creek Formation, Late Cretaceous Period, ca. 68 to 66 million years ago. A fascinating fossilized hand claw from Anzu wyliei, the so-called "Chicken from Hell," a large oviraptorosaurian theropod that roamed western North America in the waning days of the Cretaceous. The sharply recurved claw, with its well-preserved curvature and distinct groove along each side, once tipped one of Anzu's agile forelimbs - perfectly adapted for grasping, tearing, and manipulating vegetation or prey. Its dark mineralized surface and naturally fractured fossil texture highlight the immense age and geological transformation it has undergone since burial. Presented in a modern floating display frame for protection and visibility. Size of claw: 3.4" L x 1.4" W (8.6 cm x 3.6 cm); display case: 4.25" W x 9.25" H (10.8 cm x 23.5 cm)

Known popularly as the "Chicken from Hell," Anzu wyliei was a remarkable feathered theropod blending avian grace with dinosaurian strength. This large oviraptorosaur stood over 10 feet long, with a toothless beak, long powerful arms, and a tall, cassowary-like crest used for display. Its recurved hand claws - like the fossil presented here - reflect a versatile lifestyle, adapted for grasping vegetation, digging, and nest-raiding rather than combat. Living alongside Triceratops and Tyrannosaurus rex in the floodplains of Late Cretaceous North America, Anzu represented one of the last flourishing branches of birdlike dinosaurs before their extinction. With its size, feathers, and evolutionary significance, Anzu wyliei stands as a captivating emblem of the link between dinosaurs and modern birds.
