Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 200 BCE to 200 CE. An unusual terracotta vessel, modeled to represent a vernacular architectural structure of the ancient Colima culture comprised of a central hemispherical form that is finely incised with diagonally overlapping bands of cross-hatch patterns. Flanking this are twin ovoid openings, each with a pair of petite, pointy phytomorphic forms, perhaps cactii or shrubs, emerging from the rims. A very rare piece in that it depicts a shelter of this Pre-Columbian culture, offering a rare glimpse onto the way the indigenous of this region lived. Size: 11.75" L x 4.75" W x 3.5" H (29.8 cm x 12.1 cm x 8.9 cm)

Provenance: private Los Angeles County, California, USA collection, acquired by descent from the owner's father, collection amassed between 1950-1990
