Lot 90E
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. So rare, this fine pottery whistle represents a miniature seated redware shaman! He wears the classic shaman's horn on his forehead and a fanciful headdress and sits with his hands to bent knees. A look at his back reveals that this shaman is a hunchback which was quite significant in the Pre-Columbian world, as the ancients of the Americas revered individuals who survived with physical and/or mental impairments for their special status, serving as important mediators in religious and ritual matters. Size: 2.375" W x 2.375" H (6 cm x 6 cm)
