Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A superb highly burnished redware effigy vessel, modeled in the form of a domed turtle shell. The hollow body features finely incised registers of diamond motifs across the gently rounded carapace, all bordered by a raised ridge along the base. A broad, upturned spout projects from one side, allowing this vessel to function as a container for liquids or offerings. In Colima belief, turtles were powerful symbols of rain and water, linking this vessel to fertility, agricultural cycles, and the life-giving forces of nature. Such a piece would have been ritually significant, likely interred with the deceased to accompany them with sustenance and blessings for the afterlife. Size: 7" W x 4.5" H (17.8 cm x 11.4 cm)
