Description:

Northern Africa / North America, Lower to Middle Devonian era, ca. 400 to 380 million years ago. A striking trilobite fossil of the species Dicranurus monstrosus, renowned for its dramatic armor of spines. This exceptional specimen displays a multitude of elongated, slender spines radiating from its body, while the head is adorned with two prominent curled, horn-like spines that give the species its distinctive, almost fantastical appearance. The expert preparation of this piece presents the trilobite elevated from its matrix, creating the dynamic impression that this ancient arthropod is swimming just above the sea floor, perfectly capturing how these creatures once moved through prehistoric oceans. A rare and visually compelling addition to any fossil collection. Size of stone matrix: 4" L x 2.75" W (10.2 cm x 7 cm); fossil: 1.8" L x 2.5" W (4.6 cm x 6.4 cm)

Provenance: private Louisville, Colorado, USA collection, ex private
