Description:

Egypt, ca. 1300 BCE. These faience beads have been restrung with small gold details and clasp. Most of the beads are a deep cerulean blue, with small almond-color beads between the blue. "Egyptian faience" was known as "tjehnet" to the ancient Egyptians, meaning brilliant or dazzling. It was made by grinding quartz or sand crystals together with various elements, including copper oxide, which gave it its distinct blue/green tint. Faience beads were used in everyday jewelry and also used to make burial nets to be placed over mummies. This string is particularly rare because it contains beads from the Amarna period, when King Tut lived and when King Akhenaten changed the official religion of Egypt to worship of Aten. Size: the necklace is roughly 6" diameter and approximately 18 1/2" long unclasped. Provenance: Ex-Simone Simonian collection acquired 1982 All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. #110094
