Description:

Ancient Egypt, Third Intermediate Period to Late Dynastic, ca. 1070 to 535 BCE. A very rare amulet that I can say I have previously not seen. Molded faience in light green in the form of an acrobat bent over backwards touching her hands to the floor. Research shows this was a classic pose for acrobats and may be related to the myth of how the goddess Nut formed the sky by arching her entire body over the earth. Nut typically bends over forwards at her waist, but acrobats gave more of a show if they went backwards. Back in the day, even I could have touched my toes… Size: 2.125" H (5.4 cm)

Provenance: Collection of Dr. W. Benson Harer, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired before 2004
