Description:

Ancient Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, ca. 664 to 525 BCE. A flattened flask with twin curved handles flanking the neck and a bright turquoise faience glaze. The neck is narrow, with a rolled rim. Items like these were used to carry home holy water or oil from the lamps burning in the sacred sanctuaries that pilgrims had visited on their travels. Religious pilgrimages to pagan sites were important journeys that many people in antiquity would undertake at some point in their lifetime. The blue faience symbolized the color of the Nile, whose yearly cycle mirrored Egyptian beliefs in life, death, and resurrection. Comes with custom stand. Size: 4.6" W x 6.05" H (11.7 cm x 15.4 cm); 6.8" (17.3 cm)
