Description:

Ancient Egypt, Late Dynastic to Ptolemaic Period, ca. 664 to 30 BCE. A rare sistrum handle that is mold-formed from faience and covered in lustrous layers of turquoise-hued glaze. The main 'body' of the instrument handle is comprised of the goddess Hathor's head with large eyes and semicircular aegis beneath, and above is a central arch from where the percussive component of the idiophone were suspended. Between the base of the arch is a royal uraeus cobra facing out on each side. A portion of the original wooden handle is still present in the bottom. Size: 0.51" L x 1.24" W x 3.28" H (1.3 cm x 3.1 cm x 8.3 cm); 4.44" H (11.3 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-Montreal, Canada collection, acquired in the 1970s

  • Condition: Portion of original wooden handle present on bottom. Minor abrasions and pitting, with light fading to glaze pigment, and softening to some finer details, otherwise intact and excellent. Nice preservation to overall form.
