Description:

Near East, Mesopotamia / Ancient Egypt, New Kingdom, Eighteenth Dynasty, ca. 1550 to 1292 BCE. A fine jasper bead carved into the form of a figure from the chest up - the head elongated with indentations for eyes and earrings which may have been inlaid with contrasting stones or gold. The tip of the head is pierced for suspension - perhaps this was worn as a protective charm or portrait of a loved one or deity. Red jasper was a prized material that was mined in the Indus Valley (Pakistan), and traded widely throughout Mesopotamia and Egypt. The elongated head is reminiscent of the style during the Amarna Period, and perhaps styled after a carving of Akhenaten or Nefertiti. Size: 0.9" L x 0.75" W (2.3 cm x 1.9 cm)
