Description:

Egypt, Old Kingdom, 3rd to 6th Dynasty, ca. 2686 to 2181 BCE. A hefty offering bowl, carved from a stunning pink marble with white and gray banded inclusions, a round but stable base, gently curved shoulders, and a shallow cavity. Offering bowls like this were traditionally carved from alabaster, which was much more common in ancient Egypt; however, pink marble was typically reserved for those who could afford it. A faded and abstract design rests in the center of the bowl, drawn with a smoky-blue pigment, which would have had a stunning appearance during the Old Kingdom era. This example is incredibly rare due to the overall condition and surviving coloration of the pink marble. Size: 7.25" W x 2" H (18.4 cm x 5.1 cm).
