Description:

Egypt, New Kingdom to Third Intermediate Period, ca. 1550 to 664 BCE. A wonderful scaraboid, carved from white steatite, in the shape of a fish - more specifically, a tilapia, based on other Egyptian carvings - with finely-incised scales, facial features, fins, and tail. The underside depicts an incised scene of two miniscule standing representations of Anubis flanking a large Djed with two wings above. The Djed is a small pillar-shaped amulet, placed on the spine of the recently-deceased, and symbolically facilitated the process of reanimation. The amulet is laterally drilled for suspension. Size: 0.625" L (1.6 cm).
