Description:

Egypt, late Period, XXVI Dynasty, ca. 650 BCE. Exceptional carved white stone votive hippopotamus, standing on an integral rectangular plinth base, with its typical barrel-shaped body, short legs, and large head. A very rare example. According to the Met. Museum: Hippopotamus figurines made out of blue faience and without a base were popular in the Middle Kingdom and Second Intermediate Period. However, a very similar hippopotamus statuette, which must have been an export from Egypt, has been found on the Greek island of Samos. The archeological context of the piece found in Greece dates it to the 8th to 6th century B.C. And a group of small hippopotamus statuettes on bases, and made out of a white material, likely belong to the same period. Size: 5”L x 3”H (12.7 x 7.6cm).

Provenance: Private Connecticut collection. Ex. Dr. John N. Winnie, Jr. collection, St. Marys, Georgia, 1980’s-1990’s. Article by Dr. Robert Bianchi.
