Egyptian, Roman Period, ca. 1st century CE. A lively terracotta sculptural rendering of Baubo, goddess of ribald jocularity. She is nude, legs spread, a vase atop her head with a long veil hanging down one side. Traces of pink and white paint remaining. Baubo is an old woman in Greek mythology who jested with Demeter when Demeter was mourning the loss of her daughter, Persephone. She is also known as Iambe. A rare type. Size: 4-7/8"L (12.4 cm).
