Description:

Ancient Egypt, Late Dynastic to Ptolemaic Period, ca. 656 to 30 BCE. This finely carved wooden statuette represents Isis Lactans, the goddess Isis in her maternal aspect, shown seated on a throne with her right hand raised to her breast—a signature gesture signifying the act of nursing the infant Horus. Though the child is now missing, his former presence is implied by the pose, which conforms to traditional iconography of Isis Lactans widely produced from the Late Period into the Ptolemaic era. The figure exhibits a high-backed wig and originally would have worn a crown, now lost, likely the throne hieroglyph or the sun disk with cow horns, depending on the period. The left hand rests on the lap in a stabilizing pose. The body is rendered with a graceful yet simplified modeling style, and traces of white gesso suggest the figure was once painted, perhaps in vibrant polychrome. Size: 2" W x 6.5" H (5.1 cm x 16.5 cm); 7.75" H (19.7 cm) on included custom stand.

Statuettes of this type were commonly placed in household shrines or temple settings, invoking Isis’s powers of protection, fertility, and resurrection. The pose and form are consistent with documented examples in collections such as the Louvre (E 10778) and the British Museum (EA 6545).
