Description:

South Pacific, New Zealand., before 1380 CE. Remarkably rare and as seen remarkably fragile. There are only some 36 whole Moa eggs in existence, and this may make 37. Large egg - about the size of an ostrich egg, from this massive bird. Standing almost 12 feet tall, the Giant Moa is the tallest bird ever discovered, weighing up to 500 pounds. This large flightless bird lived in diverse habitats on the islands of New Zealand in forests, shrub lands, and coastal dunes. Habitat loss and human hunting – as evident from bones uncovered at many archaeological sites across New Zealand – contributed to the Moa’s extinction about 600 years ago. Size: 6.75" Diameter x 8.75" H (17.1 x 22.2cm).

Provenance: Private Collection, Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA by family descent, found in New Zealand, January 14, 1966.
