Description:

Greece, ca. 5th to 4th century BCE. While we take great pains to accurately describe all items offered for sale, occasionally we encounter pieces that are difficult to properly define. This small sculpture is one such example. The face of the figure shows that it is Greek - with beard and mustache. The figure is wearing a skin over his head - and that would lead one to identify this as Herakles. However, I see distinctly avian features in the way the "costume" flows off the body. The figure holds a circular object in his left arm and an object in his right. My best guess, this is a rare variant of Herakles. If any viewer has a better idea, I am open to suggestions! I can tell you with the root marking, type and color of clay, and the remnants of original pigment we are 100% sure of its antiquity. Size: 1-1/2"W (3.81 cm) x 4"H (10.16 cm).
