Description:

Central Europe, Southeastern Carpathian Basin, Late Iron Age, Late Hallstatt period, ca. 6th to 4th century BCE. A superb bronze astragal belt composed of 76 individual links, each shaped like vertebrae with four rounded thickenings separated by ribs - a hallmark of early examples from this tradition. The elements are strung together on four modern cords and have part of a three-looped buckle clasp - the other terminal end panel is missing. These belts were prominent adornments worn by women and are most often found in burial contexts alongside fibulae, glass beads, and other decorative ornaments. Particularly associated with the south-eastern Carpathian Basin, they saw peak production and usage during two main cultural phases: the Late Hallstatt period (6th-4th centuries BCE) and again during the Late La Tene period (2nd-1st centuries BCE). These belts likely served as powerful social markers within Iron Age communities. Size: 29" L x 2.3" W (73.7 cm x 5.8 cm); each segment: 2.3" L x 0.3" W (5.8 cm x 0.8 cm)

Provenance: private Dayton, Maryland, USA collection; ex-private F. B. collection, Maryland, USA, acquired between 1990 - 2010
