Description:

Roman, Imperial period, possibly Gaul, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A Roman ceramic stand fashioned in the distinctive marbled slip ware technique, possibly produced in Gaul. The vessel is elegantly shaped with a broad, flared foot that narrows into a slender waist before expanding again into a wide, trumpet-like rim. Its surface is adorned with swirling bands of russet, cream, and pale ochre, the result of blending slips of varying colors to create a marbled effect that was highly prized in Roman decorative arts. Such stands may have functioned as supports for vessels, ritual objects, or offerings, their bold visual appeal complementing the items they elevated. The marbled technique reflects the Roman fascination with imitating luxurious materials like stone and marble in ceramic, a practice that allowed artisans to bring aesthetic richness into domestic and ritual spaces without the expense of carved stone. Size: 2.6" Diameter x 3.3" H (6.6 cm x 8.4 cm)

Gaulish workshops, especially in regions like central and southern Gaul, were renowned for their innovations in ceramic slip ware, and this piece demonstrates both technical mastery and artistic refinement.

Ceramics with similar slip decoration can be found at the British Museum (1904,0204.909, 1904,0204.908, and 1949,1011.33) and the Metropolitan Museum of Art (17.194.852 and 17.194.849).
