United States, Border of New York and Vermont, Fort Ticonderoga area, ca. 1776. Few people realize the US Navy was actually formed on Lake Champlain, around the time of the Revolutionary War. This wood, bronze and iron pike is from that area, and was actually deaccessioned from the Fort Ticonderoga Museum. Long blade inserted into wooden pole with curved hilt secured with large bronze sleeve, pointed iron cap on base. Hilt inscribed US, pole with museum number. Size: blade measures 8-1/2"L not counting insertion tang; total length is 73"L. Provenance: Ex-Fort Ticonderoga Museum, ex-private David Silva collection.
