Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A rare example of a Jalisco dog vessel that is hand-built from pottery and highly burnished to better receive the red-brown slip. The placid puppy rests upon its belly and has a quartet of nubbin legs protruding from the stocky ends of its dramatically curved body. The raised head exhibits puffy, coffee-bean-shaped eyes, a narrow snout above thin lips, and vertical wrinkles between the perky ears. Size: 11.7" W x 7.125" H (29.7 cm x 18.1 cm)

Provenance: ex-Barakat Gallery, Beverly Hills, California, USA, acquired prior to 2000
