Description:

A remarkable electrum ring from Classical Java, expertly formed from a gold-silver alloy comprising 63.29% gold (approx. 15K) and 34.98% silver. The open-loop band terminates in capped tips and is wrapped with a finely twisted gold wire, lending a decorative flourish. At the center, a polished cabochon garnet is nestled in a shallow bezel cup secured by four gold prongs. Size of band: 1.125" Diameter (2.9 cm); interior: 0.8" Diameter (2 cm); bezel: 0.4" Diameter (1 cm); electrum quality: 63.29% (equivalent to 15K+) gold, 34.98% silver; weight: 7.4 grams. Adjustable open band.

Unlike most Javanese rings of the era, which feature solid bands, this open-form design has led some researchers to propose alternative uses—possibly as an earring. However, the opening may also have functioned simply for size adjustment. Such adornments were part of the rich visual culture of the time: classical Javanese art often portrays individuals wearing multiple rings on both hands and feet, signaling both affluence and the region’s sophisticated metalworking traditions.
