Description:

Pre-Columbian, South America, Ecuador, Manabi, ca. 500 CE. One of the most fascinating canchero (corn popper) vessels we have had the privilege of handling, a greyware pottery form with a figural handle depicting a male, probably a shaman, with bold facial features including coffee bean shaped eyes, a bulbous nose, and an open mouth revealing incised teeth. He dons round ear ornaments and a substantive pectoral with incised markings to indicate beads. He wears a loin cloth, holds both hands to his chest as if in a prayerful or trancelike state, and above his headband is a smooth, circular vessel with a central opening. A finely built form with intriguing iconography and a meticulously burnished surface! Custom, museum-quality stand. Size: corn popper itself measures 3.75" W x 7.75" H (9.5 cm x 19.7 cm); 8.25" H (21 cm) on stand
