Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A rare greenstone bead depicting the head of the Maya sun god K'inich Ahau (also K'inich Ajaw or God G). The head presents characteristic spiraling eyes and cloud-form eyebrows while an identifiable tongue protrudes out from beneath an aquiline nose and thick upper lip. Earspools are drilled into each lobe while a biconical suspension hole is drilled on top and bottom. A third hole drilled laterally through the verso is lined with bright red pigment, perhaps cinnabar. Size: 1.5" W x 1.5" H (3.8 cm x 3.8 cm); 4" H (10.2 cm) on included custom stand.
